5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Whitby
Whitby in North Yorkshire is one of the UK's most visited seaside resorts. It's well-known for its connections with Dracula and Capt Cook, and its bi-annual Goth Weekend event. But, the town is steeped in an amazing amount of fascinating history.
In this video I explore five of its less well-known subjects, all linking back to the brilliant Whitby Museum (@whitbymuseum7882). There's tales of local folklore and witchcraft, as well as significant connections to World War 2 and the birth of palaeontology.
Special thanks to the staff, curators and trustees at Whitby Museum (www.whitbymuseum.org.uk) for their cooperation with research and filming. Also a big thanks to Ryedale Folk Museum (www.ry...

High rate of suicide in Britain due to its dreary wet climate and rigid "class" structure dating back millennia. So fence that section where river turns sideways! Why arent there lawsuits to encourage enclosure?? Who owns the land? Cmon! Why doesnt the Royal family get involved? It owns most valuable land in Scotland!! It could buy the land and prevent the public and suicidal from wandering into that deathhole they call The Strid. *Oregon, USA*

thereis some talk of reopening the railway this would be sn act of criminal vandalism the rail bed dhould be resurfaced with smooth tarmac snd converted into a traffic free cycle route from Scarborough to Whitby if it couldn’.t make a profit in the 1960.s as a railway it will not now why should the taxpayer subsidise something they do not want

Two other things - The Sunod of Whitby in 664 was held to decide the Christian calendar gor feast days etc between the old Celtic Church ways and the newer Roman calendar. Next thing John Fryer Keane sailor explorer adventurer wrote his account / travelogue "Six months in the Mecca" it came out serialised in one of the London evening newspapers and scandalised the population all at the late 1800's - Keane was born in Whitby

Sadly in the Plandemic, the hotels were offered money to house illegal immigrants who should immediately be deported. The grand decided to close and take illegals. The illegals trashed the Grand, made a huge mess of it. Then when they started taking customers, the illegals were upstairs. The illegals kids were running up and down the corridors, kicking doors, was so sad to see. Then they were putting some people in the basement rooms which were vile. It needs(hopefully they have) to boot the illegals out. The hotel needs fully refurbishing, it needs to be cleaned, good prices and offer good deals. So sad really, such an old beautiful building ruined

I think I must have been one of the last visitors to Gala Land. It would have been around 1965, aged 10, when I was mooching around one late afternoon while my parents were visiting an elderly family friend up the cliff lift at the top of St Nicholas Cliff. I had escaped the boring conversation for an hour or two and was surprised to discover an amusement arcade where I had thought none existed. I remember it as empty, run down and full of old and rather decrepit attractions. I did go on the 'rollercoaster', played on some very old fashioned arcade games, and was rather excited to discover a 'What The Butler Saw' penny Mutoscope - something of an anticlimax! There were even some dodgems, though being the only driver was not especially thrilling! I spent a couple of shillings of holiday pocket money and then headed back to find my mum and dad. The following year when we returned for our annual holiday visiting my grandparents, the arcade had closed. Even though ist was rather tired and run down, it had an exotic and rather magical feel to it.

Thanks for such a great video memory - it’s wrong that there is no recognition of the pool in what replaces the space. The pool is a significant part of Scarborough’s heritage and a significant part of my childhood. In the early 1970’s my parents and another family hired one of the summer bungalows (a small room with a kitchenet) and we visited regularly for three/four summers. I remember my Dad going to church on a Sunday lunchtime - which was really a visit to the Spa Bar. In the late 1970’s I had a holiday job with the Council as a lifeguard and was regularly posted to the Pool - the day started with washing out the changing rooms, showers and toilets - with a massive industrial hose - great fun. Then on to duty around the pool - invariably the days weather followed the tide - on the summer days when the tide was out it usually was sunny and the pool filled up with people. I remember it being busy and having to keep an eye on the childrens’ pools, where the fountains acted as climbing frames - with inevitable falls! Also keeping an eye on the diving boards and pool - which attracted the daredevil teens. When we had enough staff one lifeguard was assigned to diving board duty - we rarely had enough staff - on really hot days there were hundreds of people in the pool. So many great memories, thanks again for sparking them…

My uncle had a large farm near Foxholes. In the 40's the government built Nissan huts on his farm, in which Italian prisoners were housed. After the war in the 50's, I helped to pull down many of these huts to make into field pig huts. We made a wood frame with skids and the curved sheets were assembled onto them. Some of the remaining huts were converted in the late 50's to mushroom growing houses. In a good week more than 5 tons of mushrooms were harvested and sent down to London to be sold. My uncle provided a van to pick up the women he employed, from Scarborough. He transported them to work and back every day. They would work on the mushrooms all day. Thanks for your excellent video.
